The Lies We Tell Ourselves: The Role of Libraries in Creating Hegemonic Values
This panel discussion builds on recent discussions in the library community about the notion of “vocational awe” – the set of ideas, values, and assumptions that libraries as institutions are inherently good and sacred, and therefore beyond critique – and its juxtaposition on equity, diversity, and inclusion in the profession. This panel discussion features an experienced panel of librarians with international experiences from the academic and public library sectors in Canada who shares their perspectives on the challenges of implementing EDI initiatives in libraries and what the library community can do to support and effect change. Speakers: Ravi Basi (Manager of Multicultural Services, Surrey Libraries), Adolfo Taranga (Cataloguer and Metadata Librarian, University of British Columbia Library), and Jane Schmidt (Liaison Librarian, University X (formerly Ryerson University).
